Firestone Walker: The Propagator

Hop heads rejoiced last November when Firestone Walker Brewing Company opened up its brew house here on the Los Angeles Westside. The small plot on Washington Boulevard just south of Lincoln Boulevard hosts a brewery store on one side and The Propagator Restaurant on the other. The latter offers a spacious U-shape bar crowned with several flat-screen TVs, as well as regular table seating. There’s also irregular table seating in the form of repurposed fermenting tanks refitted as booth-style dining spaces. The proprietors dub the Washington Boulevard hot spot as their “Venice location,” but it’s actually in Marina territory.

The Yums

The Bacon & Bleu burger

The Bacon & Bleu burger

The Propagator serves up unexpectedly gourmet (yet not overly chichi) eats to pair with its lineup of craft brews. Our standout starter was the Taproom Pretzel, an overstuffed sharable served with addicting cheese sauce as well as a sweet mustard. For mains, go for the gussied-up Bacon & Bleu burger with candied and peppered brown-sugar bacon; or tacos featuring grilled yellowtail or slow-roasted duck.

On Saturday and Sunday mornings, a special Beer Brunch menu features several carb-loaded plates to counteract your festivities from the night before. How’s a pancake battered-and-fried  PB&J with bacon jam sound?
