Oh Say can you Fireworks?

Yes, the rumors are true!  This year, Marina del Rey will ring in the 4th of the July with a bang, thanks to the return of the wildly popular Fireworks Extravaganza!  Sponsored by the Department of Beaches and Harbors, the show begins at 9:00pm and will last approximately 20 minutes. A favorite tradition amongst locals and visitors, spectators gather in harbor side viewing spots like Burton Chace Park and Fisherman’s Village to watch fireworks shoot across the Marina’s main channel. With the holiday less than two weeks away, it’s time to start planning America’s big birthday bash! Here are some fun ideas on how and where to celebrate…Marina style.

Burton Chace Park: A popular location to ring in the 4th, families and groups of friends flock to this waterfront park for spectacular firework views that light up the Marina harbor. Throughout the day, the park is filled with picnickers, barbeque masters (come early to snag a grill) and festive 4th of July goers, all awaiting the night’s main event. Loudspeakers will also be setup throughout the park so viewers can enjoy a synchronized soundtrack by KXLU 88.9FM for the duration of the show.

Fisherman’s Village: Another hot spot for firework viewing, this little strip is also revered for its outdoor dining. With restaurants like Shanghai Red’s and Sapori, groups can enjoy dinner al fresco while taking in the sunset or catching the fireworks as they light up the night sky.

Hornblower Cruises & Events:  If the sea is calling, hop on-board Hornblower Cruises & Events, which put guests front and center for the firework show. Choose from a three-hour yacht cruise, complete with a four-course dinner and live entertainment. Interested in fireworks only? Opt for the two-hour jaunt which takes off a little later and includes hors d’oeuvres and a boarding glass of champagne.

Dining: Please your palette (and eyes) this 4th of July by visiting one of the many restaurants that line the Marina harbor. With waterfront  views at restaurants like  Café del Rey (which boasts Mediterranean-inspired menu), Jerne Restaurant + Bar at the Ritz Carlton (which features award-winning Californian cuisine), Tony P’s Dockside Grill (known for its wide variety of American/traditional fare) and  Killer Shrimp (a local favorite), seaside diners may catch the illumination of the fireworks show.

Transportation: Need a lift for the 4th? Check out the two transportation services covering both land and sea.

  • Beach Shuttle:  The Playa Vista-Marina del Rey-Venice Pear Beach ground shuttle will operate from 10am – 8pm.  Transportation is free, with the last shuttle departing from Playa Vista at 7:15pm.  There is no service after 8pm to return to your starting point, so plan accordingly.
  • Waterbus: For a nominal fee of $1 each way, this water taxi links up to seven locations throughout the Marina. Operating hours are 11am – midnight.
