Welcome to our new blog series, 90292 Eats, which explores dining in Marina del Rey. The staff of the Marina del Rey Convention & Visitors Bureau is more than happy to try out our local restaurants and point you in the right direction of what to order. Bon Appétit!
When Doma Kitchen proprietor Angie Corrente found out her leased restaurant space in Manhattan Beach was closing for renovations, the fate of her business seemed uncertain – not for long, though, as a spot in the lessor’s Marina del Rey center became available. The crew packed up and headed 10 miles north to Villa Marina Marketplace in fall 2016, and Marina del Rey locals have been enjoying Doma’s ethnic recipes ever since. Doma means “home” in the Slavic languages, an appropriate name for a petite restaurant where everything sent out from the kitchen tastes like a loving grandmother prepared it.
The well-traveled owners, Angie Corrente and Stan Mayzalis, and Chef Kristina Miksyte collaborated a globally inspired menu, though Eastern Europe is the predominant influence.
The breakfast/brunch and lunch menu offers several familiar favorites (Belgian waffles and a few egg scrambles) as well as sandwiches and a few lamb-based entrées. The Plov rice bowl, featured in both lunch and dinner menus, is a slightly sweet Uzbek-style braised rice dish coated in herbs and onion relish, similar to a pilaf. Miksyte’s Chicken Kiev came out with a perfect breaded coating over tender, juicy herbed chicken breast. A few of the share plates can serve as entrées, too – we liked the falafel, a home recipe of Corrente’s Egyptian friend. And for a sweet ending, the eight-layer Russian Honey Cake hit the spot.
Doma Kitchen features a rotating selection of local art, as well as periodic live music by local bands. For the latter, you’ll want to subscribe to Doma’s newsletter (on the website) to be notified of shows, since there isn’t a firm schedule as of yet. Music nights are popular, and reservations are a must.
