Featured Business: Pro SUP Shop Staying Afloat During Pandemic

While many small businesses struggle to survive the effects of COVID-19, others have found ways to pivot and thrive. One example of a Marina del Rey business that has stayed afloat is Pro SUP Shop. The family-owned company specializes in standup paddleboard and kayak rentals. In the beginning when businesses were temporarily shut down, Pro SUP Shop got creative. They shifted their focus on paddleboard sales and also started a gift card program.

As the pandemic continued, locals were seeking ways to stay active outside and found that being on the water felt safe. Because kayaking and paddle boarding keep you socially distanced, the family-owned business saw a significant increase in kayak and paddle board rentals as well as new customers throughout 2020.

Pro SUP Shop adopted new safety protocols to follow industry reopening guidelines and ensure the safety of customers. For example, a bleach solution is used to disinfect rental equipment such as paddle boards, paddles, kayaks, and life jackets between customer use. The staff frequently cleans highly trafficked area surfaces such as the check-in desk with sanitizing wipes or disinfectant spray. Customers use PayPal QR Code for contactless reservations and payments. Hand sanitation stations are also available to customers.
